Freedom of Style
Dance attire for a modern dance cla*s or practice is not as strict as that of a ballet cla*s.This doesn't mean modern dancers are not as serious about their style of dance.Modern dance itself is a free form style of dancing that gives dancers the creative freedom to dress however they want to, within reasonable limitations.Of course, it depends on the dance company or dance studio director's instructions.
Form Fitting
Modern dance clothing needs to be form fitting, due to the nature of the dance movements. Many dancers wear solid-colored camisole leotards with footless tights or footless unitards.Solid black is a standard color as it's easy to read the dancer's bodies in solid dark colors. These selections of clothing allow the movement of the body to be seen clearly. This is especially important for young dancers, as the instructor needs to tell if they're doing the movements correctly by watching the lines of their bodies.
Performance Attire Can Make a Statement
Dress or costuming for modern dance performances has more variety than the practice dance attire. Many modern dance routines have movements that need to flow, so the dancers will wear dance dresses, which are like a camisole leotard with an attached sheer flowing skirt. Some dances depict themes of power, struggle or controversy, so solid colored unitards are quite common. For example, half the dancers may wear solid white and the others solid black. There might even be one dancer in solid red to make a dramatic statement.
Let the Hair Tell the Story
The hairstyle may not seem important as part of dance attire, but it can be.Practice time requires the dancer's hair be pulled back away from the face. This allows the director to concentrate on the lines of the neck and shoulders. At performance time, the hair plays a part in the overall look of the costume and attitude of the dance. The hair may be severe, smoothed back to not draw attention to the hair.It could also require the hair be wild, long and flowing to show energy, anger or flow in the dance.Hair colored in wild crazy colors could coordinate with the theme of the dance.
Barefoot Dancing
The modern dance dress code for the feet of the dancers is easy, as they go barefoot. At least most of the time the dancers are barefoot; some may wear flat ballet slippers, a suede lyrical strap on the feet or even a low cut basic black jazz shoe. The choices and styles of what the feet will wear is as open and free-spirited as is modern dance.
